Convert an existing unconditioned storage room into a soundproofed, acoustically correct home theater


A combination of mass, decoupling and sound dampening techniques were employed to mitigate sound from both entering and escaping the theater. Extensive calculations were performed to provide adequate ventilation and cooling. Acoustic absorption panels were custom built and positioned to mitigate unwanted audio reflections. A pseudo-random binary slat diffuser was built for the rear wall to create enveloping sound. After all the equipment and treatments were installed, the room was measured via an acoustic microphone and appropriate equalization was introduced.


The combination of detailed plans and careful construction produced a home theater experience that exceeded expectations. Additionally, there was a substantial savings realized from custom creating many of the elements, including the screen, speakers and acoustic treatments.
